The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are recommending that the public use insect repellents and take other precautions to avoid biting insects that carry serious diseases. The incidence of these diseases is on the rise.
EPA registers repellent products that have demonstrated effectiveness in preventing mosquito and tick bites for varying lengths of time (Fradin 1998)(Goodyer, Croft et al. 2010)(Fradin and Day 2002, Bissinger, Zhu et al. 2009). Not only has repellent use been demonstrated to reduce the risk of being bitten by mosquitoes and ticks, but it is also associated with reducing the likelihood of being infected with the diseases they transmit (Debboun and Strickman 2013).
ADDITIONAL Clinical Studies
In a field trial comparing a formulation containing 40% DEET (N,N-diethyl-3-methyl benzamide) and >30% lemon eucalyptus oil as protection against mosquitoes demonstrated that the 40% DEET formulation provided 100% protection against mosquitoes for 7 hours, while the total natural eucalyptus oil (lemon) in DEET FREE DRBRX BugOff! provided >95% protection for 3 hours (Frances, Rigby et al. 2014).
In a systematic review aimed to assess the effectiveness of plant-based repellents against Anopheles mosquitoes that are the common carriers for malaria. Essential oils from lemon-scented eucalyptus (used in DRBRX Bug Off!) showed good repellency with 8 h complete repellency against different species of Anopheles.(Asadollahi, Khoobdel et al. 2019)
For centuries, witch hazel, a naturally derived product has been harvested from the witch hazel plant in North America, where it’s been used for everything from promoting skin health to fighting off infections and deterring unwanted pests. Witch hazel is an astringent as an alcoholic extract derived from the hamamelis virginiana plant. It is known for an array of benefits, including its ability to soothe the skin and reduce inflammation (Thring, Hili et al. 2011). This astringent has been used on the skin for centuries to relieve bruises, sprains, minor injuries and irritations, including insect bites. Witch hazel contains chemicals called tannins.
